PITCHING FOR SUPPORT
Ladybird Care Foundation
Operating a unique peer mentor program to support bereaved parents whose child has died. Volunteer parent mentors with lived experience receive high quality training and support enabling them to provide critical emotional, psychological and social support for bereaved parents, free of charge.
Bereaved family members often feel isolated from their wider families and community due to the social stigma that surrounds conversation about child death. The ramifications for Australia’s mental health support system are immense. Wait times to access professional grief counselling are excessive and can be financially restrictive to many Queensland families. Ladybird Care’s peer mentor program directly addresses this gap in targeted bereavement support in Queensland.
Ladybird Care is pitching to expand their peer mentor program to families in rural and regional Queensland, including employing a First Nations specialist consultant to help facilitate best practice care within these communities.
Presented by:
Wayne Pascoe
Co-founder & Director, Ladybird Care Foundation
Following the death of his daughter Emma, Wayne Pascoe became passionate about affecting change in bereavement care support services across Queensland. Wayne is a Board Member of Ladybird Care Foundation, a member of the Community Advisory Group at the QLD Children's Hospital, and also a parent mentor.
Save Our Supplies
Improving the lives of disadvantaged people by enabling better standards of healthcare through the provision of free medical supplies.
Save Our Supplies create free medical supplies by repurposing clean hospital waste. Their collection bins in the operating theatres of Brisbane hospitals are used to collect clean, unused supplies and equipment that would otherwise be sent to landfill. By partnering with community outreach programs in QLD and overseas to facilitate distribution, they improve healthcare outcomes for vulnerable individuals and families.
They will pitch to fund the purchase of a delivery vehicle, enabling Save Our Supplies to collect an additional 2 ton of unused medical waste each week.
Presented by:
Claire Lane
CEO, Save Our Supplies
Claire started SOS in 2012 as a response to the appalling waste of clean medical supplies she witnessed working as a theatre nurse in QLD. She has received several awards including the 2022 Federal Minister’s Nurse TrailBlazer of the Year and the 2022 Brisbane Lord Mayor's Small Business Awards for Sustainability.
StandbyU Foundation
Preventing complex social issues such as abuse, domestic violence and isolation through the mobilisation of family and friends.
StandbyU has developed a world-first, innovative way to support families at risk of domestic violence to ensure they can always access the help they need, and importantly, when they need it.
This program is called the StandbyU Shield and it works through mobilising a network of family and friends to respond to incidents of domestic violence through a wearable safety device. When activated, the device sends live one-way audio for responders to listen in and escalate to emergency services if need be. They are pitching to fund the expansion of their core services, ensuring 20+ more families on their waitlists have access to support when they need it.
Presented by:
Chris Boyle
Founder & Chief Visionary Officer
Chris has been protecting children and helping vulnerable families for over 25 years and has gained international recognition for his passion and expertise, including a Churchill Fellowship in 2012. He founded StandbyU to bring the focus back on human connections to address social problems like domestic violence and abuse.
